This
piece premiered at Montreal’s Agora de la danse in March
2004. At once quartet and double duo, the latest of choreographic
works from Dominique
Porte is a hymn to the idea of respect for others: for their intimacy,
their space; a way of approaching how two people can be attracted
to one another, come together and drift apart. Who is the other?
How can the other be approached? Through movement, through sensitivity?
With our concrete or emotional selves? Dancers and musicians play
out the roles of influence on those who surround us: a quick, choppy
dance coexists with one that is more sensual and rounded, electronic
and acoustic music combine together. In a dynamic of action/reaction,
the choreography reflects the inner states of its performers, with
moments of tension, of attention, silence and absence.
Immersed in this quartet of
performers, Dominique Porte, the performer, is at the heart of
the project,
with a heightened
perception of the
presence of others. And so that she not find herself "more
alone than solo", she has surrounded herself with some
of the artists with whom she shares a long history of creative
complicity.
Dancing with Dominique is the luminous Sara Hanley. Composer without
equal, Laurent Maslé is also at the helm of the mixing board.
The talented Charles Papasoff rounds out the quartet on bass clarinet
and piano: a new voice, a breath of fresh air. With this piece
and its sly title, Dominique Porte leads us on a path that draws
us in
towards interiority, showing us its double: the space given or
surrendered to the other. So many paths to explore – come
cross paths with her. In the strictest of shared intimacy.
"Don’t miss your chance
for a magnificent experience at l’Agora de la danse this week.
Dancer/choreographer Dominique Porte and her collaborators, dancer
Sara Hanley and musician/composers
Laurent Maslé and Charles Papasoff, have pulled off quite
a feat with Plus seule qu’en solo, a simple but very
generous work for four artists." La Presse, Montreal, March 2004
"At once deconstructed
and clearly directed, Plus seule qu’en
solo is a very good portrayal of the connections that develop
between four creative individuals." Le Devoir, Montreal,
March 2004
