Watch the interview with Dominique Porte

Dominique Porte’s new creation marks a return, after eleven years, to the solo form, choreographing for herself. JE, Dominique Porte's new solo has its source in a chaotic dynamic in which the audience is invited to share the preliminary turmoil that is the starting point for all creation. Plumbing the heart of the choreographer's personal and artistic journey, JE unfolds like the earth movements of a volcano releasing words, music, and movements.

Blending the real and fictional, these memories of defining moments, make JE an emphatically autobiographical work.

JE : A Unique Encounter

Looking, returning, stopping, going away, loving, fantasizing becoming another person, wanting everything, turning around and... going elsewhere, otherwise: JE is autobiography somewhere between reality and re-invention. A combination of music, movement, and words, JE is a voyage in time, in motion, in thought and music.

"Biography brings us facts but can never replace living experience. Dance is a live art, an art of immediate experience, of the present. Also, the ways the body and different techniques and encounters influenced me in my artistic path inspired me to create a biography of the body, a kaleidoscope within movement, a sequence of flashes of my life – from my apprenticeship in dance starting with my first steps, including classical ballet, Cunningham and release, Barata Natyam, and jazz dance – associated with moments from my own creations and from works I performed for artists such as Marie Chouinard and Japanese choreographer Kim Itoh. JE is performed to the music of Isaac Hayes with forays into Schubert, Bach, and Nino Ferrer, as well as composers Laurent Maslé and Charles Papasoff.

JE is one possible version of my story, and an invitation to audience members to interpret what they receive from it each in his or her own way."

The premiere of JE took place on September 24, 2011, at Théâtre du Bic (Québec).
